Driving Sustainable Change: Dunedin

Sime Group with Participants from Dunedin
Sime Group with Participants from Dunedin

On the 15th of August 2024, Sime Group delivered another successful Resource Sorter training session in Dunedin, attended by 10 participants from Naylor Love Construction Company. This session not only explored the Waste Hierarchy but also highlighted the pressing local issue—the Dunedin Council’s plans for a new landfill near a wetland, capable of holding five million tonnes of waste over 50 years. This sparked important conversations about sustainable solutions and how to collectively work toward New Zealand’s waste-free vision by 2040.

Participants engaged in discussions about minimizing waste through reduction, re-use, and recycling strategies. The training emphasized how adopting practices like resource sorting can reduce landfill dependency and protect sensitive areas such as wetlands. Attendees brainstormed ways to transform construction waste into valuable new materials, laying the groundwork for a greener industry.

The session called for making resource sorting an integral part of Kiwi culture. By fostering a mindset where waste is seen as a resource, initiatives like Sime Group’s can inspire individuals and industries alike to contribute to environmental stewardship. With shared knowledge and actionable steps, sustainability can become a way of life in New Zealand, driving progress toward a cleaner, waste-free future.
